Bingin has its unique charm, featuring breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and waves that attract surfers worldwide. Mule Malu is hidden within this paradise, offering a laid-back retreat that feels like a well-kept secret among friends. More than just a place to stay, it serves as the perfect home base on the Bukit Peninsula to uncover its coastal beauty.
Before Mule Malu came to life, Italian founders Alessio and his wife Nina explored various creative paths; however, the constant pull of city life began to wear on them. Drawn to Bali’s natural allure and limitless creative opportunities, they made the move, lured by Bali's sparkling atmosphere and the surf that attracts so many. It was during this time that the idea for Mule Malu was born. Back then, the Bingin area lacked mid-range accommodation options, with most places catering only to the high-end or budget markets. They saw an opportunity to create something in between, and the vision for Mule Malu began to take shape.
AN AUTHENTIC TROPICAL STAY
Alessio and Nina designed Mule Malu to embody the natural essence of Bali, focusing on the warmth of the local staff, traditional thatched roofs, and thoughtfully crafted interiors. While the aesthetic includes subtle influences from Italy and the Mediterranean, the experience remains authentically Indonesian.
The couple emphasizes the importance of creating an inviting and friendly atmosphere that makes guests feel at home and encourages them to immerse themselves in the local culture. This dedication is reflected in the resort’s design, which features open-air showers and cozy rooms that enhance the connection to the lush tropical surroundings.
THE HEART OF MULE-MALU
Alessio and Nina have built Mule Malu with a focus on local design and shared values, creating trust within their team and promoting sustainability in all aspects of their operations. More than just a place to stay, Mule Malu serves as a collective effort where lessons in eco-conscious living extend beyond the retreat. The team organizes regular neighborhood cleanups, collecting plastic and debris–a simple yet impactful act of respect for the environment.
Mule Malu’s commitment to responsible hospitality is further exemplified by the CHSE certification awarded in April 2022 by Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. This recognition confirms that the retreat adheres to the highest standards of cleanliness, health, safety, and environmental stewardship–showcasing thoughtful intention in every detail.
SMALL STEP, BIG IMPACT
Mule Malu’s commitment to better practices is evident in all aspects of its design. Solar panels line the rooftop, harnessing the sun’s energy to heat water while reducing carbon emissions. Each room is wrapped in Rockwool insulation, providing a cool, breathable space that enhances thermal comfort. Striving for a plastic-free environment, Mule Malu minimizes single-use plastics and provides guests with refillable glass bottles for water, along with liquid dispensers for soap, shampoo, and conditioner.
Their approach to water management is equally thoughtful. A bio-septic tank processes all household wastewater, recycling it into clear, odorless water that nourishes the earth–taking water from the island and giving it back. While the pool celebrates nature, its saltwater is kept clean using a salt chlorine generator, offering a fresh, natural alternative to harsh chemicals. At Mule Malu, every choice reflects a deeper connection to the island and a dedication to conscious living.
Although sourcing supplies without plastic packaging remains challenging, Alessio’s team takes a hands-on approach by visiting local markets with reusable boxes rather than relying on large suppliers that overuse plastic in their packaging. Simple swaps, like using bamboo straws in place of plastic ones, are just the beginning. For the Italian couple, the real key lies in education–raising awareness about sustainability and making thoughtful choices beyond products. Every small step contributes to building a better future.
EMBRACING BALI'S UNIQUE ESSENCE
Alessio and Nina have witnessed Bali’s transformation over the past two decades, understanding that much of the island’s future is influenced by government regulations and the value placed on land. At Mule Malu, they intentionally allocate space for a lush garden, creating a tropical and authentic environment for guests. This design philosophy stands in contrast to the reality in the area, where many prioritize maximizing their building capacity for profit, resulting in minimal greenery.
Their commitment to preserving natural space reflects Alessio and Nina's belief in the importance of balance. By emphasizing garden space over additional structures, they aim to foster a sense of tranquillity and connection to nature, which they believe is essential for a true Balinese experience. They remain optimistic that Bali's unique charm and rich cultural blend will continue to attract visitors and set it apart from anywhere else in the world.
