WEBSITE PREVIEW – LAUNCHING AUGUST 2021

THE HULA

A community curbside café in island rhythm.

The Hula people are long term residents of the neighborhood or just visiting for a laidback vibe with great quality service and food. The kitchen is all about colorful plates, fresh local ingredients and wholesome food. Coffee beans and baked goods are house-roasted and home-made every morning.

Sustainable & Local Sourcing

"We prefer to source local and organic wherever possible. Our ingredients are selected first and foremost based on quality and environmental and social impact. We’re constantly expanding our range with great new vegan options as we know this is the way forward."

Equal & Local Employment

"Our team consists of a good mix of men and women with mostly women in top positions. We don’t support a macho culture that you’ll often meet in Bali and stimulate equality, respect, and welfare for our workers. We’re very open in our culture and have regular one on one meetings with our staff to ensure everyone is happy and speaks their mind. We encourage a healthy lifestyle and care for their wellbeing. We provide growth opportunities to our workers. There is no limit. They can become partner if they show their superpowers."

Community Support

"We work with unskilled women who don’t have an income due to the pandemic. They make products for us, such as tote bags, t-shirts, and Balinese decorations. It may take some time and more effort to get things done but we know it directly affects them in a positive way. It brings them hope for the future and the next generation can benefit from this extra effort. They have a chance to go to school, learn a craft, and create a life of dignity and joy. Ultimately, we envision a growing community of unskilled workers who now have a future."

Sustainability Building & Design

"When we built the Hula, we used local natural materials such as recycled teak wood and bamboo.  The local crafts here are outstanding and we’re happy to promote that. Our Sumbanese Ikats have become iconic and we’ve had so many questions about where we got them. The Hula is a good mix of contemporary modern and Indonesian primitive design."

No Single Use Plastic

"We are not using single use plastics and help our customers to avoid plastics by offering glass, paper, and textiles in our packaging. We’re also educating our suppliers in their use of plastic and even dropped a supplier who was unwilling to change his way of working. We’re using washable napkins and towels."

Waste Managemet

"Our menus are made of upcycled ocean plastic made by local Balinese with disabilities. Also, we just launched a new bamboo cup holder that will replace our printed paper holders. Although what we had was already good, the bamboo has a smaller footprint than the printed paper and gives a job to craftsmen who need the work. Rubbish collection is a challenge as the local service doesn’t separate or recycle. But we have found our own ways to still make it environmentally friendly."
