Nature & Luxury

January 2025
Words & Photography by The Punch

On the serene shores of Nusa Lembongan, you will find Spring Spa, nestled within this idyllic, seaside village. The spa, with its breathtaking views of the Azure Sea and Mount Agung, is all about barefoot luxury. Spread across 2000 square meters of landscaped gardens, it features eight luxurious therapy cabins, each made from recycled teak and local Lembongan stone. Designed as open spaces to nature, these cabins invite the soothing sea breeze into every corner. The large reception pavilion, featuring eight treatment pods, a hair spa, a bar, and a relaxation area, opens up to the water, offering an oasis of calm.

Andy Grant from New Zealand, the CEO of Spring Spas’ journey from banking to wellness is as intriguing as the spa itself. Having lived in Bali for the past 10 years, he helped bring Spring Spa Nusa Lembongan to life after Ina Bajaj, its founder, purchased the land just before the pandemic. Her vision was clear: to create an oceanfront sanctuary of wellness, where treatments connect deeply with nature.

Most of the ingredients for spa treatments and the bar menu are grown on-site, highlighting the importance of locally sourced and organic products. Spring Spa Nusa Lembongan also reuses all waste, turning it into compost for their gardens, and they’ve installed a reverse osmosis (RO) system to recycle water, ensuring that every aspect of their operations aligns with their circular vision.

PUTTING WORDS INTO ACTION

Spring Spas will launch its first spa training school, offering young Balinese the chance to enter the wellness industry with a focus on sustainable therapies. The spa integrates eco-conscious practices across its operations, using on-site-grown ingredients like aloe vera and papaya, composting all waste, and providing refillable amenities with locally sourced skincare. As Bali grows, Spring Spa stays committed to lessening its footprint through sustainable design and mindful development.

RECYCLED TEAK OVER NEW WOOD

Andy believes this approach is a responsible way to manage resources, reflecting Spring Spa’s dedication to leading the change in the industry. By selecting recycled teak, they reduce the demand for new wood, making sure conscious design practices are embedded into every aspect of their build. Their focus remains on minimizing environmental impact and making thoughtful choices that honor the land they occupy.

FROM SEA TO SPA: CHERISHING ISLAND TREASURES

Locally sourced and organic ingredients are at the heart of Spring Spa’s treatment menu, with 80% of their offerings being natural and organic. They’ve curated a special section of the menu that features 100% locally sourced ingredients, like the seaweed and sea salt that Lembongan is well-known for. These elements are carefully integrated into treatments, creating a mix of nature and wellness that clients embrace. The spa takes pride in crafting these unique, organic experiences that resonate deeply with guests.

ENGAGING ALIGNED PARTNERS

The focus at Spring Spas is on using hand-blended, locally sourced, organic, and natural ingredients for most treatments. However, for treatments requiring more active ingredients, they partner with CODAGE Paris, whose products are over 90% natural and 35% eco-certified. In the hair salon, they work with Davines, a B-Corp-certified brand known for its high percentage of naturally derived, biodegradable ingredients, offering clients both sustainability and effective results.

REDUCING RESOURCES & WASTE WITH PURPOSE

In a remarkable blend of creativity, Spring Spa Lembongan transforms fresh papaya leaf stems into straws, providing a fantastic alternative to plastic. This innovative approach shows their devotion to growing an eco-friendly spa environment and integrating nature into their ethos. Illuminated by warm LED lighting, the spa exudes an inviting glow while prioritizing sustainable solutions. Every element of the spa experience is thoughtfully designed to nurture the body and honor the island’s abundant resources, showcasing Spring Spa’s dedication to preservation and waste reduction.

WATER WISDOM: SUSTAINABLE HYDRATION

n Nusa Lembongan, self-sufficiency is a key priority, especially with the island’s limited resources. To avoid relying on local water supplies, Spring Spa invested in a reverse ozmosis system that filters seawater into drinkable water. This system provides all the water needed for treatments, client use, and even the gardens, making sure the venue operates independently without straining the island’s resources. The reverse osmosis system also reduces waste, as reusable containers are cleaned and refilled on-site, eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles.

GUESTS: CONTRIBUTORS OF CHANGE

The team at Spring Spas is preparing to launch workshops and hands-on sessions aimed at educating guests about sustainable practices and wellness innovations. These sessions will offer guests the opportunity to participate in sustainability efforts actively. Additionally, they are developing a membership program that will reward clients for adopting and promoting eco-conscious habits. This program is designed to inspire guests to integrate sustainability into their daily lives, becoming active contributors to the spa’s mission.

PRESERVING BALI IS THE FUTURE

Andy recognizes the responsibility needed by Spring Spas to help preserve Bali’s culture and heritage with the looming fast-paced overdevelopment. The island’s rich culture and people at the heart of its identity are the reasons that sustainability is fundamental across all industries. Committed to minimizing waste, the focus is on reducing packaging and product waste while implementing circular systems to promote eco-friendly practices. Collaboration among businesses is important to raising awareness and using sustainability practices in daily operations. In this way, Spring Spa Lembongan looks forward to a better future where the connection between progress and preservation of Bali’s natural beauty and cultural heritage is done for future generations.
