In a world where access to clean water remains a critical challenge, Terra Water Indonesia offers an indispensable solution. Their award-winning filters, crafted from locally sourced materials, are a true reflection of sustainable craftsmanship. Tested and certified by the Indonesian Ministry of Health, they are 100% effective in eliminating harmful microbes like bacteria and viruses, making every sip safe and refreshing. But Terra's loyalty to clean water is more than safety–these filters also serve as a barrier against microplastics, making sure that what flows through them is as pure as nature intended.
Christine Manson, the founder of Terra Water Indonesia began her journey into humanitarian development which eventually led her to the shores of Indonesia. Her encounter with ceramic pot filters in Guatemala inspired her to bring this life-saving technology to Indonesia–a country grappling with the dual crises of waterborne illnesses and marine plastic pollution.
By using clay, Terra pays homage to Indonesia's rich cultural heritage, while its zero-waste philosophy reflects a deep respect for the environment through the use of natural materials from Bali and support for local artisans. Since 2020, Terra has become integral to Indonesia's most vulnerable communities. Through partnerships and generous donations, the company delivers not just water filters but also hope, education, and a vision for a healthier future. Terra's ambition reaches far beyond today; its sights are set on becoming the premier natural water filter company in Indonesia, ensuring clean, safe drinking water for All.
CHRISTINE'S JOURNEY
Christine’s experience with ceramic pot filters in Guatemala inspired her to bring this life-saving technology to Indonesia–a country grappling with the dual crises of waterborne illnesses and marine plastic pollution. Combining her expertise in clean water solutions with loyalty to green initiatives, she established Terra, a social enterprise focused on delivering immediate relief and long-term access to safe drinking water.
Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable solutions, Christine and her team collaborate with organizations such as Green School, Sungai Watch, and IDEP Foundation as well as many hospitality groups to help them conduct their corporate social responsibility projects by providing essential filters to families in need and help get plastic off the island. Oftentimes, this dedication extends to the businesses themselves; commercial partners with ESG or environmental, social, and governance goals look inward, investing in technology to implement greener initiatives while also cutting costs and waste.
HOW THE TERRA WATER FILTER WORKS
Terra filters use a combination of clay, activated carbon, and silver nano-particles through a gravity filtration process to effectively remove bacteria and parasites. The clay not only pays homage to Indonesia’s rich ceramic heritage but also facilitates the filtration process. When water is poured into the filter, gravity draws it through these layers, trapping contaminants and producing 100% safe drinking water. This “Western technology meets ancient tradition” empowers communities to access clean water sustainably while addressing immediate health concerns.
EVOLVING SOLUTIONS FOR ALL
Initially created for low-income families, Terra’s terracotta filters have expanded to serve individuals across various economic backgrounds. This innovative design not only solves key social and environmental issues but also ensures affordability, making clean water accessible for low-income households while appealing to higher-end markets. By forming strategic connections with hospitality groups, Terra broadens its impact and effectively meets the diverse needs of communities throughout Indonesia.
IMPACTFUL PARTNERSHIPS: TRANSFORMING LIVES
Terra’s collaboration with the United Nations and USAID underscores its dedication to tackling Indonesia’s critical clean water crisis. With 25 million people lacking access to safe drinking water and a significant percentage of children suffering from waterborne diseases, the company is making a meaningful difference. Over the past years, Terra has expanded its services all over Java, Bali, Sumba, Borneo, Papua, and South Sulawesi, bringing vital resources to underserved communities. In Makassar, for instance, families who once relied on contaminated water sources are now thriving thanks to Terra’s creative approaches, significantly enhancing their health and quality of life.
COMMITMENT TO CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Terra is a circular economy business model, passionately dedicated to environmental sustainability. By using locally sourced natural materials and engaging local labor, Terra employs an energy-efficient no-waste manufacturing process that touches internally and externally on eleven UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In the community, this translates as families and small businesses using filters, enhancing sanitation and hygiene, reducing or eliminating plastic, and reducing boiling with wood which leads to CO2 emissions and deforestation. Long-term, this model lifts whole communities allowing them more economic and educational opportunities. Each initiative reflects Terra’s dedication to co-creating a healthier planet while supporting communities and nurturing a narrative of responsibility and hope.
FUTURE GOALS: INDONESIA'S TOP WATER FILTER
Terra envisions becoming Indonesia’s leading natural water filter company. A big goal for a country with 275 million people and logistical challenges posed by the archipelago’s–6,000 inhabited islands. However, getting safe water to hard-to-reach places, and educating communities about sanitation and hygiene is essential.
By establishing filter factories in strategic regions like Borneo, Java, and Sulawesi, Terra plans to replicate its successful Bali model on a larger scale. With a committed focus on social impact and environmental sustainability, Terra Water ignites innovation and shapes a future where clean drinking water flows freely to All.
